What this means for your home

Short answers, from the local numbers
Why might my bill be high?

Heating and cooling. Idaho Falls has about 8,090 heating degree-days and 440 cooling degree-days a year (NASA POWER, base 65°F), at about 5,490 feet. Insulate and seal the attic and ducts, service the heating system, and ask your utility about time-of-use plans.

Is solar worth it here?

Rooftop solar in Idaho Falls makes roughly 1,330 kWh a year per kW of panels (our estimate from NASA POWER sunshine of 4.55 kWh per square meter per day). Export rules differ by utility (see the table below). Size solar to what you use at home, or pair it with a battery.

Idaho incentives →
What if the power goes out?

Decide what must stay on, then size a battery or generator to that. FEMA rates Bonneville County avalanches “relatively high”.

Idaho Falls electricity providers

Do not assume every Idaho Falls home has the same provider. Idaho Falls Power and Rocky Mountain Power serve different parts of Bonneville County. Check the top of your bill, or ask the utility with your address.

  • Type: city-owned.
  • Home customers (2024): 28,142.
  • Price: 9.25 cents per kWh on average, utility-wide (EIA-861).
  • Outage minutes (2024): 72 normal days, 72 with major events.
  • Solar export: Idaho Falls Power net meters customer systems limited to the previous 12 months of use; it installs a net meter after your city permit and inspection. The page does not state the credit rate.
  • Programs: Rebates and zero-interest loans for efficiency work (amounts not listed); no solar rebate found.

Program details are from each utility’s own pages, read October 2026; we have not verified anything we do not state. Statewide: Idaho utilities.

Idaho Falls electricity rates and average bills

Every Idaho Falls home has one utility, and its rates come from Idaho PUC rate cases (Idaho Power, Avista, Rocky Mountain Power) or from a co-op or city board. The averages below are for each whole utility, not one street; your bill is the real number.

UtilityPrice we confirmed
Idaho Falls Power9.25 cents per kWh, utility-wide average, 2024 (EIA-861)
Rocky Mountain Power12.11 cents per kWh, utility-wide average, 2024 (EIA-861)

Idaho average residential price, July 2026: 13.73 cents per kWh (EIA Electric Power Monthly, preliminary), against 18.31 for the U.S. This state number is not a price for Idaho Falls alone.

Why electricity bills are high in Idaho Falls

  • Heating. Idaho Falls has about 8,090 heating degree-days a year (NASA POWER, base 65°F), so heating is the big load.
  • Cold winters. Electric heat drives winter bills, especially in eastern Idaho where heating degree days top 8,000.
  • Rising rates. Idaho Power’s rates rose in January 2026 and again with its June 2026 cost adjustments, and the state residential average went from 12.28 to 13.73 cents per kWh between July 2025 and July 2026 (EIA, preliminary).
  • Your plan and your home. The rate plan, the size and age of the house, and when you use power all change the bill; compare plans before you assume the price is fixed.

Most of this is cooling or heating and timing, which means a lot of it can be changed. See our guide to what uses the most electricity, and the next section.

How to lower your electric bill in Idaho Falls

  1. Check your rate plan. Ask your utility about time-of-use plans and peak-time credits (Idaho Power Time of Use plan and A/C Cool Credit) and about written net billing terms before you sign a solar contract.
  2. Move big loads out of the peak. Run the dishwasher, laundry and EV charging when power is cheapest on your plan.
  3. Attack heating and cooling first. Shade windows, seal and insulate the attic and ducts, service the air conditioner and use a smart thermostat.
  4. Pick efficient equipment. See our guide to lowering your electric bill.
  5. Size solar to your own use. It saves the most on power you use at home; see the solar section below.
  6. Add a battery if exports pay little. It moves midday power into the evening peak.
  7. Charge an EV cheaply. Use the cheap hours on your plan.

We have not put dollar savings on these steps because they depend on your home and plan. Use the calculators in the cost section to test your own numbers.

Power outages and backup power in Idaho Falls

In 2024 the average Idaho Falls Power customer lost 72 minutes of power in a normal year (72 with major events; EIA-861, whole utility). FEMA rates the biggest risks in Bonneville County as: avalanches (relatively high); cold waves (relatively high); lightning (relatively high).

  • Avalanches (relatively high): Decide what must stay on and size backup to that.
  • Cold waves (relatively high): Cold waves raise demand and can cause both outages and frozen pipes. Keep at least one room warm with a battery-run heater circuit or a generator.
  • Lightning (relatively high): Lightning causes short outages and damages electronics. Surge protection and a battery that switches over automatically protect the things you care about.

Solar panels in Idaho Falls

About 1,330 kWh a year from each kW of rooftop panels here (our estimate). Idaho Power and Rocky Mountain Power pay newer solar owners a time-of-day export credit that is well below retail; Avista and some co-ops still bank kWh on their own terms.

  • Permits come from Building Division, City of Idaho Falls; the utility must approve the connection before you switch on.

Idaho Falls energy FAQs

Which utility serves my Idaho Falls home?

It depends on your address. Idaho Falls Power and Rocky Mountain Power serve different parts of Bonneville County. Check the top of your electric bill or ask the utility with your address.

Is solar worth it in Idaho Falls?

Idaho’s sun is good (about 1,330 kWh a year per kW of panels, our estimate), but newer solar owners on Idaho Power and Rocky Mountain Power are paid a low time-of-day rate for exports, so solar pays best when sized to your own daytime use. Avista and some co-ops still bank kWh, on their own terms. See the Idaho incentives.

Is there a federal tax credit in 2026?

No. The 25D credit for solar and batteries ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025, the charger credit ended after June 30, 2026, and the EV purchase credit ended after September 30, 2025 (IRS). Idaho has no state solar credit, but it allows an income tax deduction of 40 percent of cost in year one and 20 percent for three more years, capped at $5,000 a year.

Should I get a battery or a generator in Idaho Falls?

A battery is silent and automatic, works with solar and can save money at the evening peak. A generator keeps running as long as it has fuel and suits multi-day outages. Many homes choose a battery first; see the comparison table above.

How much does home battery installation cost in Idaho Falls?

EnergySage’s data shows about $15,889 for a 13 kWh battery in Idaho before incentives; local quotes differ.

What do I need to power my air conditioner in an outage?

It takes a large battery system or a standby generator, because starting a central air conditioner needs far more power than running it. Check your unit’s nameplate and consider a soft starter, or back up a window or mini-split unit instead.

How much does a home EV charger install cost?

EnergySage’s U.S. range is about $800 to $3,000 before the charger; your panel and wiring decide your price. Idaho Power’s Time of Use plan makes overnight charging cheaper (summer off-peak energy about 7.5 cents per kWh); we found no Idaho Power EV charger rebate, and Kootenai Electric lists one in third-party guides that we did not confirm.

Do I need a permit?

Usually yes for all four. Building Division, City of Idaho Falls handles permits in Idaho Falls. The utility must approve any system that connects to your wiring.

Does weather affect solar panels, batteries and generators?

Yes. Panels lose a little output when hot, many batteries reduce power in extreme heat or cold, and generators derate in heat. Pick equipment rated for Idaho Falls’s weather.

How do I choose an installer?

Ask for the contractor license number and look it up on the Idaho DOPL license lookup, get itemized written bids, make sure the installer sizes the system to your loads and your rate plan, and check warranty and service. We do not rank installers.
