Energy decisions depend on where you live: what your utility charges, how often the power goes out, how much sun you get and what your state allows. Each state guide below starts from that state’s own numbers and explains what they mean for backup power, home batteries, solar and EV charging.

How to read these numbers
Price is the average residential rate from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA, July 2026, preliminary). Outage minutes are the average minutes without power per customer in 2024 (EIA-861, SAIDI): “normal days” leaves out major storm days, the other column includes them. A big gap between the two means storms, not everyday faults, cause most of the lost hours.
Try the numbers for your own home: solar potential, battery backup, generator sizing and EV charging cost calculators.
