South Coast MA Energy Guide: Solar, Batteries, Backup, EV

In short: on the South Coast, New Bedford and Plymouth are Eversource (about 29.9¢ per kWh in 2024) and Fall River is National Grid (about 33.6¢). Next door, Taunton’s town utility charged about 21.5¢ but reported 193 outage minutes per customer (EIA). Plymouth County is rated “very high” for coastal flooding (FEMA).

Here is what is local to New Bedford, Fall River, Plymouth and the towns between them. Statewide rules (net metering, SMART 3.0, the state solar tax credit, electrician licensing) are in our Massachusetts energy guide.

South Coast at a glance

  • Eversource (New Bedford, Plymouth, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Wareham and nearby): about 29.9¢ per kWh in 2024 for homes on its own supply; 81 outage minutes per customer counting major storms, 66 without, across Massachusetts (EIA-861, 2024).
  • National Grid (Fall River, Somerset, Swansea): about 33.6¢ per kWh; 134 outage minutes with major storms, 91 without (EIA-861, statewide).
  • Town utilities nearby: Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (Taunton, Raynham, Berkley) about 21.5¢, with 193 outage minutes and more than two interruptions per customer in 2024; Middleborough about 15.8¢ and 19 minutes (EIA-861; towns from MassGIS).
  • Sun: about 3.9 to 4.0 kWh per square meter per day (NASA POWER, 2001 to 2020). Our rough estimate: about 1,140 kWh a year per kW in New Bedford and Plymouth and 1,165 in Fall River, a little more than Boston.
  • Top hazards: Plymouth County is “very high” for coastal flooding and “relatively high” for hurricanes, ice storms, lightning, inland flooding and strong wind. Bristol County (New Bedford, Fall River) is “relatively high” for hurricanes, ice storms, inland flooding and strong wind (FEMA National Risk Index, December 2025).
  • Public charging: 123 ports in Fall River, 65 in Plymouth and 46 in New Bedford (AFDC, October 3, 2026).

Your utility and what it means

  • Eversource towns: state net metering and SMART 3.0 apply. Eversource takes part in ConnectedSolutions, which pays $275 per kW of average battery discharge during 30 to 60 summer events, locked for five years (program materials). We could not read Eversource’s own pages, so ask Eversource about any EV rate or charger offer.
  • National Grid towns: same state rules and ConnectedSolutions; National Grid estimates a battery earns around $1,200 a year in the program. Its Charge Smart MA program pays $0.05 per kWh for off-peak EV charging in summer and $0.03 the rest of the year.
  • Taunton and Middleborough light plants: they set their own solar credit, battery and EV rules, and they are not among the utilities named in the ConnectedSolutions program materials. Ask the light plant before you design a system.

Supply programs: New Bedford, Fall River, Dartmouth and Plymouth each have a municipal aggregation plan approved by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU list, May 2026). The utility still delivers the power; the program buys the supply. Compare it with other offers on the DPU’s Energy Switch Massachusetts site.

Backup power on the South Coast

Two kinds of outage matter here: winter ice and coastal storms. Bristol and Plymouth counties both rate “relatively high” for hurricanes, strong wind and ice storms, and Plymouth County’s coastal flooding rating is the highest FEMA gives. Taunton’s 2024 record shows how much utilities differ: many short interruptions, about 82 minutes each on average (our arithmetic on EIA data).

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to run a generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust away from doors, windows and vents, and never in a garage. After a hurricane, that rule matters most, because people run generators for days. Use battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms, and have a licensed electrician install the transfer switch; see generator installation.

Solar on the South Coast

The South Coast gets a little more sun than Boston by NASA’s figures. At 2024 average prices, a kW of panels is worth roughly $342 a year in avoided purchases in New Bedford or Plymouth (Eversource) and about $391 in Fall River (National Grid), by our estimate. Real output depends on your roof, shade and tilt, and salt air near the water makes it worth asking installers about corrosion-rated racking and hardware. Check your roof with the solar potential tool and test quotes in the solar savings calculator.

Hurricane ratings also matter for roof work: ask how the system is attached and rated for wind, and whether your homeowner’s insurance needs to know. See solar installation for the steps from contract to switch-on.

Batteries

For Eversource and National Grid homes, ConnectedSolutions helps pay for a battery: one averaging 5 kW over the summer events would earn about $1,375 a year at $275 per kW, before any share the manufacturer keeps (our arithmetic). The program says it tries not to call events when large storms are forecast, so the battery stays charged for hurricane and ice-storm outages. See home battery installation and battery cost.

EV charging

Public charging is thinner here than around Boston: New Bedford had 46 public ports in October 2026 (AFDC), so most drivers will charge at home. At about 30 kWh per 100 miles, 2024 average prices work out to roughly $9 per 100 miles with Eversource, $10 with National Grid and $6.40 with Taunton’s utility (estimates). Run your own numbers in the EV charging cost calculator. A Level 2 charger needs a licensed electrician and an electrical permit; see EV charger installation.

Permits and inspections

  • New Bedford: Department of Inspectional Services issues building and electrical permits.
  • Fall River, Plymouth and other towns: your city or town building department and wiring inspector issue the permits.
  • Coastal and flood zones: work near the shore or in a flood zone may need extra local review; ask the building department early.
  • Light plant towns: in Taunton and Middleborough, ask the light plant about its own interconnection process for solar and batteries.
  • Condos and associations: get written approval before you sign.

South Coast energy FAQ

Which utility serves New Bedford, Fall River and Plymouth?

New Bedford and Plymouth are Eversource; Fall River is National Grid. Taunton, Raynham and Berkley are served by the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant, and Middleborough has its own light department. The state’s MassGIS utility map shows the provider for every town.

Is solar worth more in Fall River than in New Bedford?

Per kWh, usually yes, because National Grid’s 2024 average price was higher than Eversource’s and Fall River’s sun estimate is slightly better. By our rough estimate, a kW of panels was worth about $391 a year in Fall River and $342 in New Bedford. Your own bill and roof decide the real figure.

What backup makes sense for hurricanes on the South Coast?

For multi-day outages, a standby generator with a transfer switch, or a battery paired with solar so it can recharge. Keep equipment above flood level in low-lying areas. A portable power station is enough for phones, lights and a CPAP during shorter outages.

Does my town have its own electricity supply program?

New Bedford, Fall River, Dartmouth and Plymouth all have municipal aggregation plans approved by the DPU. The program buys supply for residents who don’t opt out, while Eversource or National Grid still delivers it. Check your bill’s supply line, and compare prices before you switch.
