Fort Wayne Energy Guide: Solar, Batteries, Backup Power and EV

In short: Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) serves Fort Wayne. In 2024 it had the fewest outage minutes of Indiana’s big utilities, about 2.6 hours per customer including storms (EIA). Homes paid about 16.3¢ per kWh. Allen County’s risks are winter cold, tornadoes and wind, so backup is about the occasional bad storm.

This page covers backup power, solar, batteries and EV charging in Fort Wayne and Allen County. Indiana’s export rules, the solar property tax deduction and state prices are in our Indiana energy guide.

Fort Wayne at a glance

  • Indiana Michigan Power (Fort Wayne): about 16.31¢ per kWh for homes on average in 2024; 157 minutes of outages per customer counting major storms, 98 without, and fewer than one interruption a year (EIA-861, 2024).
  • Co-ops at the county’s edges: Northeastern REMC averaged 14.96¢ and just 61 outage minutes; Noble County REMC 13.53¢ and 136 minutes; Heartland REMC also serves part of Allen County (EIA-861, 2024).
  • Sun: about 3.8 kWh per square meter per day (NASA POWER, 2001 to 2020). Our rough estimate: about 1,120 kWh a year per kW of panels.
  • Top hazards: Allen County is “relatively high” for cold waves, winter weather, tornadoes, strong wind, lightning and river flooding (FEMA National Risk Index, December 2025).
  • Public charging: 169 ports at 69 locations in Fort Wayne (AFDC, October 3, 2026).

Your utility and what it means

I&M is part of American Electric Power and is headquartered in Fort Wayne. Indiana homes don’t choose a supplier; your address sets your utility. Homes near the county line may be on a co-op, so check your bill.

  • Solar exports: I&M credits power you send to the grid under its excess distributed generation tariff, which the state utility commission approved on January 26, 2022 (Cause No. 45506) over the objection of the state consumer counselor. The credit is 1.25 times I&M’s average wholesale energy cost from the year before, reset each year and well under 16¢. Ask I&M or your installer for this year’s rate.
  • Batteries are already here: 332 of I&M’s 1,629 net-metered home solar systems in Indiana had a battery in 2024, the most of any Indiana utility in EIA’s count. So installers in the area have done it before; ask how many I&M connections they’ve completed.
  • EV charging: in 2021 I&M announced IM Plugged In, with a $500 incentive toward the wiring for a home EV meter and an overnight charging rate 33% below standard from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Ask I&M whether it’s still open and on what terms.
  • Grid work: in March 2026 I&M announced a roughly $34 million project to upgrade the transmission lines and six substations serving downtown Fort Wayne.

Backup power in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne’s grid record is good: in 2024 I&M’s Indiana customers averaged under one interruption and about 1.6 hours out on a normal-weather basis. Major storms added about an hour. That’s a much smaller gap than in Indianapolis or Northwest Indiana. The risk is the rare event, especially in winter: Allen County’s top ratings are for cold waves and winter weather, when a furnace blower and a sump pump both need power.

Compare them in backup power options. Safety: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to run a generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust away from doors, windows and vents, never in a garage, with battery-backed carbon monoxide alarms. A transfer switch or interlock should be installed by a registered electrical contractor under a permit; see generator installation.

Solar in Fort Wayne

By our rough estimate, a 6 kW system in Fort Wayne makes about 6,700 kWh a year on a flat surface; a south-facing, unshaded roof usually does better. Used at home as it’s made, that power would be worth up to about $1,090 a year at I&M’s 2024 average of 16.3¢. Exports earn the much lower excess generation credit, so size the system to your daytime use and move laundry, dishwashing and EV charging into sunny hours. These are estimates, not promises.

Snow sits on panels for part of the winter here, which our flat-surface estimate doesn’t fully capture; steeper roofs shed it faster. Model your roof with the solar potential tool, test quotes in the solar savings calculator, and read solar installation and how export credits work.

Batteries in Fort Wayne

With a reliable grid, a battery in Fort Wayne earns its keep mostly by storing midday solar for the evening instead of exporting it for the low credit. Backup for a winter outage is a bonus. I&M customers already pair batteries with solar more than anyone else in Indiana. We found no confirmed I&M or state battery rebate. See home battery installation and home battery cost.

EV charging in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne has 169 public charging ports. At I&M’s 2024 average and about 30 kWh per 100 miles, home charging costs roughly $4.90 per 100 miles by our estimate; an overnight rate, if you qualify, would lower it. A Level 2 charger needs a 240-volt circuit and an electrical permit pulled by a registered electrical contractor; see EV charger installation and the EV charging cost calculator.

Permits and inspections

  • Fort Wayne and Allen County: the Allen County Building Department issues permits for the city and the county. See its permits FAQ and residential permit guide, and use its jurisdiction map if you live near a town line.
  • Who pulls the permit: the county’s rules (effective September 6, 2024) say electrical permits are issued to a registered electrical contractor, and its electrical fee list covers wiring of solar panels. Ask your installer for their county registration.
  • Historic districts: since November 7, 2025, permits for properties in a Fort Wayne local historic district follow a separate process; check before you plan panels on a visible roof.
  • Utility approval and HOAs: I&M must approve the interconnection before solar or a grid-tied battery is switched on. Get written HOA approval before you sign.

Fort Wayne energy FAQ

How reliable is power in Fort Wayne?

By 2024 federal data, I&M’s Indiana customers averaged about 157 minutes without power including major storms and fewer than one interruption, the best totals among Indiana’s five big investor-owned utilities. Northeastern REMC, a co-op at the county’s edge, averaged just 61 minutes.

Who issues solar and electrical permits in Fort Wayne?

The Allen County Building Department handles permits for both Fort Wayne and the county. Its rules say electrical permits go to a registered electrical contractor, so your installer or electrician normally applies. Projects that need plan review go through the state, and historic district properties follow a separate process.

Does I&M still pay full price for my solar exports?

Not for new systems. Since its excess distributed generation tariff took effect, new solar exports are credited at 1.25 times I&M’s average wholesale energy cost, reset yearly and well under the 16¢ retail average. Earlier net-metering customers keep their terms until 2032 or 2047.

Is a home battery worth it on such a reliable grid?

For backup alone, many Fort Wayne homes do fine with a smaller option such as a portable generator or power station. A battery makes more sense with solar, because it keeps your own power for the evening instead of exporting it at the low credit. Run your loads through our battery backup calculator first.
