Saturday morning, coffee in hand, you’re standing in the hallway staring at a beige box that has said 70°F, all day, every day, for eleven years. The kids are at soccer, you’re about to leave for the afternoon, and the furnace will happily heat an empty house until you’re back. A smart thermostat would have turned it down already, and turned it back up in time for dinner.

The best smart thermostat for most homes is the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium: it comes with a room sensor and a C-wire adapter, senses when you’re home, handles heat pumps with backup heat, and works with Alexa, Google and Apple. In a Google Home, or a house without a C wire, choose the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). On a budget, the Amazon Smart Thermostat costs about $80.

Below are seven picks, including one for ductless mini splits, with the specs that matter: C wire, heat pump support, sensors, subscriptions and price. We researched and compared them using maker spec sheets, ENERGY STAR data and published prices; we did not test them in our own homes.

Prices change often. The prices below are what we saw at the maker or a major retailer in October 2026; check the current price before you buy.

The best smart thermostats

1. ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium: best overall

The Premium is the one that does almost everything. In the box: the thermostat, a SmartSensor for another room, and a Power Extender Kit for homes without a C wire. It has a 4-inch color touchscreen, radar occupancy sensing, an indoor air quality monitor with filter reminders, and Alexa built in. ecobee lists support for conventional systems up to 2 heat/2 cool and heat pumps with 2 stages plus 2 stages of aux heat, and it can run a humidifier, dehumidifier or ventilator through an accessory terminal. It’s ENERGY STAR certified, comes with a 3-year warranty, and its free eco+ software adds schedule suggestions and time-of-use rate features. The SmartSensor matters most in two-story homes, where the thermostat can aim for the bedroom at night instead of the hallway.

  • Good: sensor and C-wire adapter included; strong heat pump support; works with nearly every smart home platform; no subscription needed for heating and cooling.
  • Watch out: the speaker, voice assistant and security features add cost you may not use; ecobee’s security features have paid plans (from $5 a month), though the thermostat itself doesn’t need one.
  • Best for: most homes, especially two-story houses with hot and cold rooms, and heat pump homes.

2. Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen): best for Google homes

Nest’s newest Learning Thermostat has a 2.68-inch round screen (600 x 600 pixels), a Soli radar sensor for motion, and sensors for temperature, humidity and ambient light. It comes with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) for another room. Its Smart Schedule learns the temperatures you choose at different times and adjusts based on motion in the home, and Savings Finder suggests small schedule tweaks. Google’s spec sheet says it works with most 24 V systems (gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump and radiant) and controls up to 3 heating and 2 cooling stages plus heat pumps with aux and emergency heat. It has a built-in rechargeable battery and Google’s Power Sharing, so most homes won’t need a C wire. It’s ENERGY STAR certified and Matter-certified.

  • Good: genuinely hands-off learning; sensor included; works without a C wire in most homes; detailed aux heat lockout and dual-fuel settings; no subscription.
  • Watch out: the most expensive pick here; setup requires the Google Home app; heat pump and some other systems still need a C wire or Nest Power Connector; no Apple HomeKit app, though Matter lets other platforms control it.
  • Best for: Google Home and Android households, and homes without a C wire.

3. ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced: best value

The Enhanced has the same 4-inch, 540 x 540 touchscreen and the same radar occupancy sensing as the Premium, and it also includes the Power Extender Kit. What you give up: the bundled SmartSensor (sold separately), the air quality monitor, the built-in speaker and some heat pump depth, since ecobee lists heat pumps with 2 stages plus 1 stage of aux heat. It works with Apple HomeKit, Alexa, SmartThings and IFTTT, and the warranty is 3 years, or 5 with professional installation.

  • Good: ecobee’s smart features for about $45 less than the Premium on sale; adapter included; add sensors later if you need them.
  • Watch out: no room sensor in the box; one stage of aux heat may not cover larger heat pump systems.
  • Best for: single-story homes and apartments with central heating and cooling.

4. ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential: cheapest ecobee

The Essential brings ecobee’s app, free eco+ software, time-of-use features and home energy reports to a lower price, with a color touchscreen and an ENERGY STAR label. It works with ecobee SmartSensors (sold separately) and with Apple HomeKit, Alexa and Google Assistant. There are trade-offs: no built-in occupancy sensor, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and ecobee says most homes without a C wire will need its Power Extender Kit, which costs about $25 extra. It also supports fewer stages (up to 2 cooling + 1 heating, or 2 heating + 1 cooling), though ecobee lists dual-fuel heat pumps as compatible.

  • Good: ecobee’s software for about $110; works with three big voice platforms; 3-year warranty.
  • Watch out: no occupancy sensor in the thermostat; budget about $25 more if you have no C wire; limited stage support.
  • Best for: simpler single-stage systems and buyers who want ecobee’s app for less.

5. Amazon Smart Thermostat: best budget

Amazon’s thermostat is built with Honeywell Home technology, is ENERGY STAR certified, and is set up and controlled entirely through the Alexa app. It works with most 24 V systems, including conventional forced air, heat pumps and radiant boilers, and offers schedules, humidity sensing, an emergency heat mode, an energy dashboard and Alexa routines that adjust the temperature through the day. The one big rule: it needs a C wire. If you don’t have one, Amazon sells a C-Wire Power Adapter separately and in a bundle.

  • Good: the lowest price on this list; simple setup if you already use Alexa; no subscription.
  • Watch out: C wire required; no remote room sensors; Alexa only for app control; not for electric baseboard.
  • Best for: Alexa homes with a C wire and a tight budget.

6. Sensi Lite: best no-frills, no fees

Sensi, made by Copeland (formerly Emerson’s climate business), keeps things simple: an ENERGY STAR certified Wi-Fi thermostat with a 7-day schedule, a free app with no subscription, and a stated policy of not selling your data. It doesn’t need a C wire on most systems, but Sensi says one is required for heat pumps and for heating-only or cooling-only systems. For a color touchscreen and room sensor support, the Sensi Touch 2 (about $210, C wire always required) is the step up.

  • Good: low price; no fees; privacy-minded; widely sold through utility marketplaces, often with rebates.
  • Watch out: no learning or occupancy sensing; heat pumps need a C wire; the 3-year warranty applies when a professional contractor installs it.
  • Best for: people who want remote control and a schedule, nothing more.

7. Mysa Smart Thermostat for Mini-Splits: best for mini splits

A ductless mini split has no wall thermostat to replace, so the usual smart thermostats can’t help. Mysa’s version plugs into a standard outlet, learns the infrared signals from your existing remote, and then replaces it. Mysa says it works with most mini splits, window and portable ACs that use an infrared remote with a display (brands like Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and LG), needs a line of sight to the indoor unit and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and offers schedules, geofencing, humidity sensing, energy reports and HomeKit, Alexa and Google Assistant support. Mysa promises “no subscriptions, ever,” and gives a 5-year warranty.

  • Good: 10-minute setup; reads the room temperature where you are, not at the indoor unit; no subscription.
  • Watch out: one per indoor unit; needs line of sight and an outlet nearby; check Mysa’s compatibility list for your model.
  • Best for: homes heated or cooled by ductless mini splits.

Also worth knowing: the Google Nest Thermostat (the simpler, non-learning model, about $130 at Google) is a good cheaper Nest if you don’t need the sensor or learning schedule. Honeywell Home’s T9 and T5 are listed as discontinued on Honeywell’s site, so we don’t recommend buying them new now.

How to choose a smart thermostat

  • Check compatibility first. Pop off your old thermostat’s cover, photograph the wires and run the maker’s compatibility checker. Thick wires with wire nuts mean line voltage (electric baseboard): you need a line-voltage thermostat and, ideally, a licensed electrician.
  • Know your C wire situation. No C wire? Choose an ecobee Premium or Enhanced (adapter included) or a Nest, or budget for an adapter. Our no C wire guide covers the options.
  • Heat pump? Look for aux heat control. DOE warns that setting back an ordinary thermostat on a heat pump can trigger costly backup heat. Pick a model that supports your stages and lets you lock out aux heat above a set outdoor temperature. See the heat pump guide.
  • Buy sensors if rooms feel different. In two-story or drafty homes, a remote sensor can do more for comfort than any other feature.
  • Match your smart home. Google Home: Nest. Apple Home: ecobee. Alexa: ecobee or the Amazon Smart Thermostat.
  • Look for ENERGY STAR and a rebate. ENERGY STAR certified models average about 8% savings on heating and cooling bills, and many utilities offer rebates on them. Check smart thermostat rebates before you buy.

What will it save? ENERGY STAR’s average is about 8% of heating and cooling bills, or about $50 a year. As an example (our estimate), a home spending $1,200 a year on heating and cooling would save about $96 a year at 8%, so a $165 thermostat pays for itself in under two years, sooner with a rebate. Smart thermostat questions

What is the best smart thermostat in 2026?

For most homes, the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium: it includes a room sensor and a C-wire adapter, senses occupancy with radar, supports heat pumps with two stages of aux heat and works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and SmartThings. If you use Google Home or have no C wire, the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is the better fit.

Is ecobee or Nest better?

Both are excellent. ecobee is better for Apple and Alexa homes and for room sensors, with the Premium including one. Nest is better for Google Home, for homes without a C wire, and for people who want the thermostat to learn on its own. Our ecobee vs Nest comparison goes model by model.

How much does a smart thermostat save per year?

ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats save about 8% of heating and cooling bills on average, about $50 a year; homes that sit empty much of the day tend to save more. Makers quote higher “up to” figures. Your savings depend on your climate, your system and how much you already set back the temperature.

Do smart thermostats work without Wi-Fi?

Yes, as regular thermostats. They keep running your heating and cooling on the schedule they already have, and you can change the temperature on the screen. You lose phone control, geofencing and other internet features until Wi-Fi comes back.

Can I use a smart thermostat with electric baseboard heat?

Not the ones for central systems. Baseboard heaters run on 120 or 240 volts through the thermostat, so you need a line-voltage smart thermostat such as Mysa’s baseboard model, one per heater or zone. Turn off the breaker before touching the wires, and hire a licensed electrician if you’re not sure.

Is there a tax credit for a smart thermostat in 2026?

No federal tax credit applies to a smart thermostat in 2026. Many utilities offer rebates, instant discounts in their online stores, or bill credits for joining a demand-response program. Search the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder by ZIP code and check your utility’s website.
