You’ve decided the old thermostat has to go. You’ve narrowed it down to the two names everyone mentions, you’ve got two browser tabs open, and they look almost the same: round screen or square screen, both “smart,” both about the same price. Here’s how they actually differ, and which one fits your home.

The short verdict: choose the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium if you use Apple Home or Alexa, want a room sensor in the box, or have a multi-stage heat pump. Choose the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) if you use Google Home, have no C wire, or want a thermostat that learns your schedule by itself. Both save energy, need no subscription and are ENERGY STAR certified.
We compared the flagship models head to head, then the cheaper ones, using the makers’ spec sheets and product pages and ENERGY STAR data. We did not test them ourselves.

Energy savings
This is closer than the marketing suggests. Both flagships are ENERGY STAR certified, and ENERGY STAR’s field data puts certified smart thermostats at about 8% savings on heating and cooling bills on average, or about $50 a year. The makers make bigger claims: ecobee says “save up to 26%” on heating and cooling, and Google points to studies showing 10 to 12% on heating and about 15% on cooling for Nest. Treat those as best cases.
The real difference is how each one gets there. Nest’s Smart Schedule learns from the temperatures you choose and from motion in the home, so it builds a schedule for you. Savings Finder then suggests small tweaks. ecobee starts from a schedule you set, then uses its occupancy sensors (in the thermostat and the SmartSensor) to switch to “away” when nobody’s around, and its free eco+ features suggest changes and shift heating and cooling around time-of-use rates. If you never want to think about it, Nest’s approach is friendlier. If you like to be in control and see why it did something, ecobee’s is clearer.
Both can join utility demand-response programs (Nest’s Rush Hour Rewards, ecobee’s Community Energy Savings) that can earn you bill credits. More in do smart thermostats save money?
Room sensors and comfort
Both flagships now include one remote sensor, which is a big step for Nest. The difference is what the sensor knows. ecobee’s SmartSensor reports temperature and occupancy, so the thermostat can average only the rooms where people are, or follow you to the bedroom at night. The Nest Temperature Sensor reports temperature, and you choose which sensor the thermostat follows at which time. In a two-story house with a hot upstairs, either one helps; ecobee’s occupancy-aware sensors do a little more on their own.
Compatibility and the C wire
Both work with most 24-volt systems. Nest’s edge is power: its Power Sharing and built-in rechargeable battery let it run without a C wire in most homes (Google puts the exceptions at under 1% for this model). But heat pump, heating-only, cooling-only and zoned systems may still need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector. ecobee solves the same problem differently: the Premium and Enhanced include a Power Extender Kit that installs at the furnace. On the cheaper ecobee Essential, the kit costs about $25 extra. Either way, run the maker’s online compatibility check with a photo of your wires first. See the best smart thermostat without a C wire.
Heat pumps
Heat pump owners need a thermostat that keeps the expensive backup electric heat off when the heat pump can do the job. The Department of Energy warns that ordinary setbacks on a heat pump can trigger that backup heat and cancel your savings. Both brands handle it. Nest lists control of heat pumps with auxiliary and emergency heat, an aux heat lockout adjustable from 0 to 70°F, and a dual-fuel balance point from 10 to 50°F. The ecobee Premium supports heat pumps with 2 stages plus 2 stages of aux heat and has outdoor temperature threshold settings for the compressor and aux heat. For larger or multi-stage systems, the ecobee Premium’s two aux stages are a plus. Ask your installer which settings suit your heat pump. More in best smart thermostat for a heat pump.
App, smart home and voice
This decides it for many people. Nest is set up and controlled through the Google Home app and is Matter-certified, so other Matter platforms can control it too (you may need a Matter hub from that platform). It has no native Apple HomeKit app. ecobee has its own app and works with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings, and the Premium has Alexa built in and can be enabled with Siri. If your house runs on Siri or Alexa, ecobee is the more natural fit. If it runs on Google, Nest is.
Subscriptions, support and privacy
Neither thermostat needs a subscription to heat and cool your home. ecobee sells optional Smart Security plans (from $5 a month in the US) for its security features, with a free Core tier; Google’s Google Home Premium is aimed at cameras and doorbells. On long-term support, note that Google ended app support for the first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025; they still work as basic thermostats. ecobee is owned by Generac. Neither record guarantees the future, but a thermostat should last many years, so it’s worth knowing.
The cheaper models: ecobee Enhanced and Essential vs Nest Thermostat
Not ready to spend $200 or more? Each brand has a cheaper line:
- ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced (about $165 on sale): the Premium’s screen and radar occupancy sensing, with the Power Extender Kit included, but no SmartSensor in the box, no air quality monitor and 1 stage of aux heat for heat pumps. 3-year warranty (5 with pro install).
- ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential (about $110 on sale): ecobee’s app and eco+ features with a color touchscreen; no built-in occupancy sensor, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, limited stages, and the C-wire kit is extra.
- Google Nest Thermostat (about $130 at Google): the simpler Nest without the learning Smart Schedule or the bundled sensor, but with Savings Finder and the Google Home app.
At this level, the ecobee Enhanced gives you the most features for the money if you have a C wire problem or want occupancy sensing; the Nest Thermostat is the simple, good-looking choice for a Google home.

ecobee vs Nest questions
Which saves more energy, ecobee or Nest?
There’s no independent head-to-head that settles it. Both flagships are ENERGY STAR certified, and ENERGY STAR’s average for certified smart thermostats is about 8% of heating and cooling bills. How much you save depends more on your settings, how often the house is empty and your climate than on the brand.
Does ecobee work with Google Home?
ecobee lists Google Assistant compatibility, so you can control it by voice and in Google’s ecosystem. Setup and the full feature set live in the ecobee app. If you want everything inside the Google Home app, Nest is the simpler choice.
Does Nest work with Apple HomeKit?
Not through a native HomeKit integration, but the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is Matter-certified, and Google says it can be controlled by other Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants, which can include Apple Home. You may need a Matter hub from that platform. ecobee works with HomeKit directly.
Do ecobee or Nest need a subscription?
No. Both control your heating and cooling, schedules and energy features with no monthly fee. ecobee’s paid Smart Security plans cover its security features, and Google Home Premium mainly covers cameras and doorbells.
Which is better for a home without a C wire?
Both can work. Nest runs without a C wire in most homes thanks to Power Sharing, though heat pump and some other systems still need one or the Nest Power Connector. The ecobee Premium and Enhanced include a Power Extender Kit that supplies the power instead. Run each maker’s compatibility check with a photo of your wiring.
